Note: Wisconsin charges $10 online and $25 by mail/in-person for the Statement of Change of Registered Agent/Office - a $15 penalty for paper filings. Wisconsin administers business filings through the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI), not a Secretary of State. File online through the DFI One Stop Business portal. Mail filings go to Wisconsin DFI, Division of Corporate and Consumer Services, PO Box 93348, Milwaukee WI 53293-0348. You can also update the registered agent through your annual report filing (fee depends on entity type: $25 LLC online, $40 LLC paper). Expedited processing is available for an additional $25 (next-day).

How to change your registered agent in Wisconsin
-
Choose your new registered agent first.
Do not file the change form until you have a new agent lined up. The new agent has to consent to the appointment, and most states will not process the change without that consent in hand. If you let coverage lapse, the Wisconsin SOS can administratively dissolve your LLC.

Get the Statement of Change of Registered Agent/Office. Download the form ↗
You can file this online through the Wisconsin Secretary of State portal. The form requires your LLC name, the new agent name and address, and a signature. The new agent must consent to the appointment.
-
Pay the $10 filing fee.
Pay by credit card during the online filing. A small processing surcharge usually applies. Mail filings accept check or money order made out to the Wisconsin Secretary of State.
-
Notify your old agent.
Once the change is processed, your old agent's responsibility ends. If you are paying them an annual fee, cancel that subscription so it does not auto-renew. Most services prorate or refund the unused portion.
-
Verify the change in state records.
Search your LLC name on the Wisconsin SOS business search and confirm the new registered agent is listed. Processing typically takes 5 business days standard; next business day for $25 expedite, so check back after that window.
Important to know about Wisconsin
- Wisconsin has a reverse fee structure - $10 online vs $25 paper. Online is 60% cheaper.
- Wisconsin does not have a Secretary of State - business filings go through the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI).
- You can bundle the agent change into your annual report (no separate fee), but must still pay the annual report cost ($25 LLC online / $40 LLC paper).
- Some third-party guides cite $25 flat fee - this is incorrect for online filings. The official DFI fee schedule confirms $10 online.
